“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them,” Moreno wrote on X. “He should not serve in the House of Representatives.”
Moreno said he had “hoped to keep this matter private,” but that Miller’s “increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior” had made that impossible. He also urged his former son-in-law to seek “serious psychological help.”
The Allegations
Moreno’s statement came amid allegations detailed by his daughter. In police reports obtained by ABC News, Emily Moreno alleged multiple incidents of physical violence during the marriage, including being thrown against a wall, having a gun held to her head, and having hot water thrown at her.
Those allegations have not been tested in court. Miller has firmly denied them, and he was never charged with a crime. Separate allegations involving the couple’s child were not substantiated by the Department of Children and Family Services.
Reactions and What Comes Next
Miller, who represents Ohio’s 7th Congressional District and has been a close ally of former President Donald Trump, has rejected the accusations and given no public indication that he intends to step down. As of Sunday, there was no sign that House Republican leaders had joined Moreno’s call.
The episode leaves Ohio Republicans in an uncomfortable position. A sitting senator has said publicly that a sitting congressman from his own state and party does not belong in office, while that congressman insists the allegations against him are false and points to the fact that he was never charged.
