A new Gallup poll has landed at the center of America’s growing fight over artificial intelligence: 70% of Americans say they oppose the construction of an AI data center in their local area — and nearly half are strongly opposed.

The finding is one of the clearest signs yet that the public mood toward the AI build-out is hardening, even as the technology races ahead.

What the Poll Found

According to the survey, barely a quarter of Americans favor having a data center nearby, and only 7% strongly favor it. What stands out is how broad the opposition is. It crosses party lines and demographic groups, making this one of the rare issues where Americans of very different politics largely agree.

The reasons are practical rather than abstract. About half of those opposed point to the enormous resources these facilities consume, with water use and energy use cited most frequently. Others raise concerns about pollution — including noise, air, and water.

The Backlash Is Already Real

This is more than polling sentiment. The opposition is reshaping the map. Dozens of U.S. jurisdictions have enacted moratoriums or restrictions on new data center construction, and local opposition blocked or delayed billions of dollars worth of projects in the past year alone.

For an industry that needs to build at massive scale to keep up with demand, that local resistance is becoming one of the biggest practical obstacles to expansion.

Two Sides of the Argument

The AI industry argues that data centers are essential infrastructure — the physical backbone for technology that increasingly touches search, healthcare, finance, and national security. Communities counter that they should not have to absorb the strain on water, power, and quality of life so that the benefits can flow elsewhere.

Where Do You Stand?

It is shaping up to be one of the defining local battles of the AI era: the technology nearly everyone uses, and the infrastructure almost no one wants next door. So we want to hear from you — would you support or oppose an AI data center being built in your community?
